Apptio unveils FinOps tools to tackle soaring AI cloud costs

Fri, 7th Nov 2025

Apptio has announced major updates to its IBM Cloudability and IBM Kubecost platforms to address challenges faced by organisations seeking to manage and optimise cloud costs amid increasing demand from artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.

Data provided by Apptio shows that 55% of business leaders lack sufficient information to evaluate technology spending effectively, highlighting a widespread need for better transparency and control.

Growing pressure from AI

Enterprise investment in AI infrastructure is forecast to reach USD $571 billion globally by 2026, according to research from IDC. As AI initiatives grow, the increased demand for compute and storage is straining cloud resources and budgets, making financial operations (FinOps) approaches ever more critical for IT and business leaders.

Eugene Khvostov, Chief Product Officer at Apptio, commented,

"Generative AI is not only pushing the limits of cloud infrastructure; it's challenging the ability of technology and business leaders to make informed decisions and evaluate tech spend ROI. The AI era is one of information and compute-power overload. So, it's imperative for organisations to gain control over their cloud and data estate. That's the first step in harnessing the AI opportunity and exactly what our new FinOps solutions are designed to address - proactive, and predictive cloud cost management."

Cloudability Governance features

IBM Cloudability Governance introduces new capabilities designed to give IT teams enhanced control over multi-cloud environments. Integration with infrastructure as code tools, such as HashiCorp Terraform and HashiCorp Cloud Platform, allows for centralised state management and the enforcement of organisational policies before infrastructure deployment.

The platform is designed to automate cost compliance monitoring directly within engineering workflows. Cloudability Governance users can expect near real-time insight into actual cloud costs post-deployment, as well as AI-powered recommendations to help identify and reduce waste. Centralised management aims to decrease risk and ensure consistent deployment across complex architectures, while embedded checks help to enforce best practices and maintain alignment with budgets.

Armon Dadgar, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of HashiCorp, said,

"Our customers want accurate, real-time visibility into the cost implications of the infrastructure they manage and deploy with HashiCorp Terraform. With native bi-directional integration between HashiCorp Terraform and Cloudability, engineers gain visibility into infrastructure costs, embedded governance checks, and optimisation opportunities directly within their workflows."

Kubecost 3.0 enhancements

The release of IBM Kubecost 3.0 aims to address growing financial and operational complexity in Kubernetes environments. The updated platform offers tools for unified resource management and cost allocation across multiple clusters. It also provides advanced recommendations for savings, including automated container right-sizing, GPU optimisation through NVIDIA's DCGM exporter, and improved node group sizing insights.

Kubecost 3.0 introduces enhanced scalability and security features intended to help organisations expand their Kubernetes deployments while maintaining operational control. These updates allow teams to track spend against expectations, identify cost anomalies, and validate deployment decisions using detailed billing data.

Purpose-built for AI-driven environments

Both Cloudability Governance and Kubecost 3.0 are purpose-built to support businesses as they shift their focus towards AI-driven workloads. The aim is to provide end-to-end visibility and equip FinOps practitioners with efficiency tools and actionable insights for proactive decision-making in the cloud.

The public preview of Cloudability Governance's integration with HCP and Terraform Enterprise is now available. Kubecost 3.0 is currently accessible for general use.
