Aurora Networks launches 50G PON gear & DOCSIS amplifier

Aurora Networks has expanded its DOCSIS and PON portfolio with new 50G products and a unified DOCSIS 4.0 amplifier aimed at helping broadband operators modernise their networks.

The update includes 50G remote and shelf optical line terminals, or OLTs, and a 50G shelf optical network unit, or ONU. Aurora also introduced a Unified DOCSIS 4.0 Smart Amplifier that supports both Full Duplex DOCSIS and Extended Spectrum DOCSIS in a single device.

The new PON products are designed to sit alongside Aurora's existing 50G line-up. They cover headend and outside plant deployments, as well as customer-side hardware.

A key part of the PON expansion is support for coexistence on the same fibre. Aurora said operators can run GPON, XGS-PON and 50G PON together, while the portfolio also supports 10G EPON and 50G PON coexistence.

That approach reflects a broader challenge for cable and broadband providers as they seek to increase network capacity without replacing infrastructure all at once. Many operators are weighing upgrades across hybrid fibre-coaxial and fibre networks at the same time, and suppliers have been trying to offer equipment that supports more than one migration path.

The amplifier launch addresses a similar issue in DOCSIS upgrades. Aurora said its new smart amplifier supports both Full Duplex DOCSIS and Frequency Division Duplex, or Extended Spectrum DOCSIS, up to 1.8 GHz, allowing operators to use a single amplifier across different network architectures.

The device also includes a built-in cable modem and remote management functions. That gives operators a way to standardise part of their outside plant equipment while managing mixed upgrade plans.

PON options

Beyond the transport layer, the expanded PON Evo portfolio includes DOCSIS provisioning and back-office support for both ITU-T PON and IEEE PON, including EPON. Aurora also cited software-defined networking activation, streaming telemetry and zero-touch provisioning as part of the deployment model.

Those products can also be deployed in its node housings and VHUB platforms. The strategy links access hardware with management and provisioning systems rather than treating network upgrades purely as a hardware replacement cycle.

He added that the latest products were intended to widen the range of network upgrade choices available to customers.

Operations software

Aurora also highlighted ServAssure NXT AI, a network management and automation platform developed with partner DvSum. The system is aimed at cable and PON surveillance and optimisation across network operations.

Aurora said the software helps operations teams analyse issues and triage faults more quickly to restore service faster. Its inclusion alongside the hardware announcements suggests the company is positioning management software as part of the network transition rather than as a separate operational layer.

Other product areas included IP video and advertising systems, security products based on public key infrastructure, secure code signing and software assurance, and professional services for HFC and FTTx network design and deployment.

Aurora Networks is a business of Vistance Networks, which is listed on Nasdaq under the ticker VISN. The launch adds to competition among network equipment suppliers serving operators that are balancing DOCSIS 4.0 upgrades with deeper fibre roll-outs and evaluating how to support multi-gigabit services over existing and new infrastructure.

For operators, one of the central questions remains whether to pursue incremental upgrades across legacy cable assets, move faster to fibre access, or maintain both paths in parallel. Aurora Networks' latest product set is built around that choice, with support for multiple PON standards on the same fibre and a DOCSIS amplifier designed to span more than one architecture.
