Bitdefender & Creators Guild unite to protect digital creators
Bitdefender and the Creators Guild of America have formed a partnership to address cyber threats affecting online content creators.
The collaboration aims to help digital creators protect their identities, content, and personal information from cybercriminals who increasingly target this sector as its influence grows.
Rising threats
Recent findings from Bitdefender Labs highlight a significant increase in attacks targeting content creators and online influencers, particularly with the expanded use of deepfake technologies. According to the company, more than 9,000 malicious livestreams were detected on YouTube in the past year, with cybercriminals rebranding compromised channels to appear authentic. These attacks have impacted prominent influencers, including those with millions of followers and billions of accumulated views.
Ciprian Istrate, Senior Vice President of Operations in the Consumer Solutions Group at Bitdefender, commented on the risks facing creators.
"Cybercriminals target content creators to exploit the vast networks of fans, followers, and sponsors they've worked hard to build. Once inside a creator's network, they can inflict significant damage – rapidly moving across platforms, launching malicious livestreams, and spreading fraudulent links to maximise impact. We're proud to partner with the Creators Guild of America to raise awareness and help defend against this growing threat."
Awareness initiatives
The joint endeavour will deliver campaigns, educational webinars, research, and other resources to inform content creators on securing their channels and adopting effective cyber protection measures.
Bitdefender has released a cybersecurity solution specifically designed for the needs of digital content producers, including social media influencers and creative professionals. The software, known as Bitdefender Security for Creators, operates by continuously monitoring creators' devices and networks for unusual activity, fraudulent emails, malicious URLs, and malware. Real-time alerts are provided to help prevent potential threats before harm occurs.
Daniel Abas, Founder and President of the Creators Guild of America, emphasised the vulnerability of those working in this sector and the necessity for greater protection.
"Creators need protection. Most creators are first-time entrepreneurs, working in a field that's new and unregulated. That makes them (and their channels) unusually vulnerable to attack and exploitation. Building an audience and a brand from scratch is incredibly difficult, but getting hacked and losing everything you've worked for is far too easy. Companies like Bitdefender are making real progress against the growing security threats to creators and their channels, and the CGA is proud to support their work. Creators need and deserve the same level of security enjoyed by brick-and-mortar businesses, and we're encouraged to see Bitdefender rising to meet that challenge."
Educational and advocacy efforts
The Creators Guild of America is known for its advocacy and support services, offering accreditation, educational events, and networking for digital creators. It has recently introduced initiatives to secure fair payment, content ownership, analytics access, and other rights for its members through standard contract riders and ongoing policy development. These activities continue alongside its collaboration with Bitdefender.
Bitdefender, active in over 170 countries, has stressed the importance of this partnership in the face of evolving cybercrime. The company's research and development efforts are focused on preventing, detecting, and neutralising threats that affect consumers and professionals across the digital landscape.
The partnership signals an intention to both educate creators on cyber risks and supply them with tailored tools to enhance digital security at a time when online attacks against creative professionals continue to escalate.
