FireMon integrates Akamai Guardicore for policy governance

FireMon has launched an integration with Akamai Guardicore Segmentation, extending its policy governance model to microsegmentation.

The integration is aimed at organisations that already use FireMon to manage firewall policy across hybrid environments and want the same oversight for segmentation rules. It does not replace Akamai Guardicore's enforcement layer; instead, it governs policy above it, much as FireMon handles firewall policy.

Akamai Guardicore is used to enforce microsegmentation across data centres, cloud environments and distributed networks. By linking it to FireMon's platform, security teams can manage segmentation policy within a single model alongside firewall rules and cloud security groups.

The development addresses a practical issue for companies building zero trust security programmes. As organisations add more controls across networks and cloud infrastructure, policy decisions are often spread across separate tools and teams, creating a fragmented operating model.

The integration lets teams check whether segmentation rules match intended policy, validate changes before deployment and generate audit evidence from one place rather than manually reconciling information across different consoles.

The announcement comes as companies expand their use of segmentation but still struggle to adopt more granular controls. According to Akamai research cited by the companies, more than 90% of organisations use some form of segmentation, while about 35% have implemented microsegmentation.

That gap reflects the operational difficulty of deploying and maintaining finer-grained controls in complex environments. FireMon pointed to network complexity and visibility gaps as key barriers, particularly for businesses managing firewall, cloud and other security policies across multiple vendors.

Policy layer

At the centre of the announcement is the argument that policy governance, rather than enforcement alone, is becoming a bigger issue for security teams. Microsegmentation tools can control east-west traffic and reduce lateral movement inside networks, but the policy needed to run them consistently can become disconnected from wider network rules if managed separately.

For FireMon, which built its business around network security policy management, the integration extends that model into an area often handled independently. Customers running a multi-vendor firewall estate can now route segmentation policy through the same governance layer instead of maintaining a separate console and process for that work.

"Zero trust is a policy challenge before it's an enforcement challenge," said Jody Brazil, Chief Executive Officer at FireMon.

"Microsegmentation platforms are good at enforcement. But if segmentation policy isn't governed with the same rigor as firewall policy, you end up with strong lateral-movement protection in one place and blind spots everywhere else. This integration closes that gap," Brazil said.

Akamai presented the arrangement as a way to combine its enforcement technology with broader policy oversight across a customer's network controls. The partnership reflects a wider effort in the security market to reduce the number of disconnected control points enterprises must manage as their infrastructure becomes more distributed.

That issue has become more pronounced as organisations operate across on-premises systems, public cloud services and remote or branch environments. In such settings, access decisions can be enforced through several technologies at once, often by different operational teams.

"Akamai Guardicore Segmentation gives customers precise enforcement for microsegmentation across hybrid environments," said Misha Yaverbaum, Vice President of Product Management, Enterprise Security, at Akamai.

"Pairing that enforcement with FireMon's policy governance provides joint customers with a single, governed view across all network controls. Together, we make scaling zero trust fast, continuous and frictionless," Yaverbaum said.

Broader shift

The integration also highlights a broader market shift away from isolated security tools towards platforms that connect policy intent, enforcement and governance. As enterprise security architectures spread across more environments, buyers are increasingly focused on operating models that provide a consistent view of rules, exceptions and compliance evidence.

FireMon said centralised governance can help organisations sustain segmentation initiatives as infrastructure changes. In practice, that means reducing the risk that security policy drifts from its original intent as teams make updates across different parts of the environment.

Brazil returned to that theme in a further statement on the launch. "Microsegmentation is a critical enforcement capability," he said. "But it only holds up if policy intent stays aligned as infrastructure keeps changing. That's the governance layer we're extending here."
