N-able aids Ventnor in thwarting police cyberattack

Fri, 14th Feb 2025

N-able and Ventnor City have successfully intercepted a cyberattack targeting the city's Police Department by deploying N-able's Managed Detection and Response (MDR) solution.

The city of Ventnor received notifications from N-able that its Police Department was under attack. These alerts were crucial in allowing the city to protect its infrastructure and files, preventing any damage from taking place. This instance highlights the efficacy of using advanced tools and security measures in preemptively stopping cyber threats.

James E Pacanowski II, CGCIO/Network Administrator for Ventnor City, commented, "I can confidently say that MDR proved its value within the first six hours of deployment. We received alerts that our police department was being hit thousands of times by somebody. Thanks to N-able, the MDR solution notified us immediately and we isolated the workstation before the intruders were able to get into our network and do any damage."

Ventnor City has adopted several N-able solutions, including N-sight, Adlumin MDR, Cove Data Protection, and Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) to safeguard their IT systems. This protection covers multiple local institutions, with around 200 endpoints distributed across eight different locations. The Adlumin MDR solution was instrumental in identifying and addressing potential threats.

The Adlumin MDR solution uses artificial intelligence to integrate with existing security frameworks and detect threats that might otherwise remain undetected. It combines automated responses with human intervention to quickly manage and mitigate risks. Troels Rasmussen, General Manager of Security Products at N-able, explained, "The level of protection that Adlumin MDR can add for any organisation is a value on its own. Amid escalating threats, expanding regulations, and persistent staffing challenges, state and local organisations face unprecedented cyber alert fatigue. This solution provides the essential support they need to stay resilient."

The attack on Ventnor City serves as a reminder that antivirus software and firewalls may not be sufficient on their own. Increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks necessitate a layered approach to security measures to effectively shield IT infrastructure from various forms of intrusion.

Pacanowski further remarked, "It makes it a lot easier for me that I do not have to run around and jump through hoops knowing that there is somebody monitoring 24/7, because that phone call came at 3:30 in the morning and that particular workstation was isolated. So, knowing that there's somebody 24/7 monitoring what's going on with my system has made things a whole lot easier for me."
