Richey Suncoast Theatre marks 100 years with security upgrade
The Richey Suncoast Theatre in New Port Richey, Florida, is marking its centennial with a major focus on integrating modern security solutions while preserving its historic character.
The theatre, which has served as a centre of cultural activity since 1926, is in the midst of significant updates that blend its longstanding traditions with modern technology. Key to these changes is the introduction of a comprehensive security upgrade through a collaboration with Gallagher Security.
Security and preservation
As part of its milestone year, the Richey Suncoast Theatre sought to address the challenges of maintaining both operational efficiency and heritage preservation.
According to Doug Jones, Treasurer and Board Member of the Richey Suncoast Theatre, the implementation of Gallagher's access control system has been pivotal in meeting these dual objectives:
"Our Gallagher system gives us a level of control that enhances our day-to-day efficiency and safeguards our theatre's unique character. It's a clear example of how smart security planning can support both operational needs and preservation goals."
The upgrade was also instrumental in strengthening the theatre's application for designation as a historic property through the National Park Service.
Modernising access
Operating a public venue within a structure approaching a century old has presented unique obstacles, particularly regarding secure access for the range of activities the theatre hosts. Previously, the process relied heavily on distributing physical keys, a practice which led to logistical challenges and regular rekeying of the premises.
Jones notes, "For years, everyone just ended up with a key, which were easily lost. We had no choice but to rekey the entire building each year. That practice was both inefficient and expensive, especially for a non-profit in a growth phase."
The transition to Gallagher's Command Centre access control system ended the dependence on traditional keys. Individuals, including staff, instructors, and vendors, are now issued unique PIN codes or mobile credentials with time-based access that expires automatically. This approach enables remote management of the building, reducing the need for staff to be physically present and streamlining operations.
Jones continues, "It's phenomenal. We can manage access remotely, monitor who's in the building, and ensure every door is secure without having to be on-site. That capability helps us create a more secure building, but it also gives our dedicated staff time back in their day - for a non-profit, that's an incredible gift."
Supporting theatre growth
The investment has had a wider impact on the theatre's operations, enabling substantial growth in its programming. Where the theatre once operated a modest schedule, it now runs over 150 events each year. The improved access management has facilitated more efficient coordination with suppliers and staff, while also reducing the risk to historically sensitive areas of the venue.
"Our rapid growth has primarily been driven by our talented staff," says Jones, "but it also wouldn't have happened without a strategic reinvestment in infrastructure like Command Centre."
Balancing heritage and technology
The Richey Suncoast Theatre's modernisation underscores the balance between embracing technological advancement and maintaining historic value.
Jones said, "Gallagher is a key part of how we've been able to grow without inflating our operating costs. The system is flexible, modern, and works in a building that's nearly a hundred years old. It's a perfect match."
The partnership has been positively received by Gallagher Security as well. Luis Colon, Director of Sales – East and LATAM at Gallagher Security, remarked, "We're honored to help Richey Suncoast Theatre protect a space that means so much to its community. This project exemplifies how modern technology can preserve historic spaces without compromising their soul."
The access control improvements at Richey Suncoast Theatre are positioned as a framework for other historic venues, aiming to balance security upgrades with preservation. As it celebrates 100 years, the theatre continues to serve as a cultural hub while adapting its infrastructure to support future generations of performers, staff, and audiences.
