BlackBerry has secured FedRAMP Class D (High) re-certification for its AtHoc platform, a cloud service used by US government agencies for emergency communications and crisis coordination.

The re-certification applies to the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program standard for cloud services that handle sensitive unclassified government data, where a loss of confidentiality, integrity or availability could have severe consequences for operations or public safety.

Demand from government customers for mission-critical communications is rising as agencies increase spending on emergency notification and coordination tools. The latest approval confirms that AtHoc continues to meet the security and compliance requirements for those deployments.

Government demand

AtHoc is used for crisis communications, incident management and coordinated response during natural disasters, cyber incidents and operational disruptions. BlackBerry says the platform is used by 80% of US federal government agencies, along with defence organisations, law enforcement bodies, emergency services and critical infrastructure operators.

The designation is among the most stringent cloud security benchmarks in the US public sector and is intended for systems supporting highly sensitive workloads, even when the underlying data is not classified.

BlackBerry also linked the re-certification to recent updates to AtHoc's Command Centre, which it says provides agencies with a unified operational workspace. The company says it is designed to help teams build a shared operating picture, track personnel accountability and coordinate response activity across multiple sites and organisations.

Operational response

Those changes are intended to reduce reliance on separate dashboards and manual coordination during fast-moving incidents. That is particularly important for agencies operating in distributed environments, where response times and operational clarity can affect service continuity and public safety.

Ramon Pinero, General Manager, BlackBerry AtHoc, described the re-certification as evidence of the platform's standing in the federal market.

"Re-certification with FedRAMP Class D (High) underscores the operational maturity and security rigor BlackBerry AtHoc delivers to government and critical infrastructure customers every day," said Ramon Pinero, General Manager, BlackBerry AtHoc. "We are the only CEM platform to reach this bar in 2025, and this re-certification reflects our sustained investment in helping organizations coordinate faster, operate more securely, and respond effectively when conditions are most demanding."

Security controls

Critical event management software has become a more prominent area of spending for governments and infrastructure operators as threat environments have broadened. Agencies are dealing not only with weather-related disruptions and physical emergencies, but also with cyber incidents and the need to communicate quickly across dispersed workforces and partner organisations.

For suppliers, security credentials such as FedRAMP can be decisive because they determine whether a cloud product can be adopted across departments with strict procurement and compliance rules. Re-certification also matters because it shows a vendor has maintained those controls over time, rather than meeting the threshold only once.

BlackBerry says the decision should reassure public sector buyers evaluating secure communications systems for operational use. Company executives framed the approval as significant for agencies facing more complex operating conditions.

Public sector

"FedRAMP Class D (High) re-certification sends a strong signal to our public sector customers that BlackBerry AtHoc continues to meet the highest standards for security, compliance, and operational resilience," said Dubhe Beinhorn, Senior Vice President, Public Sector, BlackBerry Secure Communications. "As agencies face increasingly complex threats and operational demands, trusted and compliant communications infrastructure is essential to maintaining readiness and protecting public safety."
